Veneer Removal…Oh, the PAIN!!!

If you need to remove veneer from furniture before you make it beautiful with your new chalk paint, you should read this E-How article:  How to Remove Wood Veneer.  I wish I had read it first.

Yesterday, I was removing veneer with a small screwdriver after soaking the area with water to loosen it when I slipped and drove the screwdriver into the side of the other hand beneath my thumb (and it wasn’t just under the skin!)  I had a handful of blood by the time I could get upstairs and I can’t tell you how nauseous and lightheaded I became. Sweet Caro cleaned it up, poured alcohol on it (and yes it hurt like the dickens).

I was concerned because the end of the screwdriver had veneer glue on it and the water that had been soaking on the desk top for several hours was nasty.  When that whole little fat part under my thumb turned blue and started swelling, I decided to go to the doctor.   I got a tetanus shot and antibiotics.

Today, my hand is swollen, bruised, and throbbing like crazy!  I am so aggravated with myself for doing something so careless.  It will be a few days before I can resume my refinishing projects!!!

I never do a post with no pics, but in this case, I didn’t think it would be a good idea.

Treasure Hunt Thursday will still go on.  I can type slowly without much pain.  So please be thinking about something you can share with everyone.

  2. Ouch! A good lesson for us all! Thank you for the link to the veneer removal tips...I needed it too! I have been tediously scraping away at a table top and was ready to drop it off at the goodwill donation center. Maybe I'll give it another try...carefully! Hope your hand feels better soon!!!

  3. Oh gosh, Rhonda! There are times when I'm doing something like that and I can actually see something bad happening in my mind, so I quickly try to come up with a better way ~ whether it's holding something different or using a clamp or whatever. I have had these things happen to me, not bad enough to go to the ER but enough to hurt. Feel better and rest!

  4. Oh, dear! What a terrible experience for you not to mention the pain & suffering. I hope you got something to ease the pain a little and your thumb stops throbbing.

This sounds like something I'd do!

    Take care!

  6. Oh Rhonda, so sorry that this happened to you, the above comment, she said it is amazing how fast these kinds of things can happen, and that is so true.... I was talking to my brother on the phone last week when I was on my way to Canton, and just a little while later my mom called and said that my brother was on the way to the hospital in an ambulance, that he had almost cut his finger off, but thank goodness they were able to save it and no nerve damage like they first thought! Hope you feel better soon!!!

  8. Oh gosh, Rhonda. I'm so sorry. You were right to go to the dr. SIL almost sliced his finger off replacing their old dishwasher 3 wks. ago. Had to go to the ER and get 14 stitches on the end of his pointer finger. It can happen in a flash....
