I recently pulled some things from my ‘holding area’ in the basement thinking I would take them to my booth at Old Banks Antiques. I haven’t seen these little desert plates for a while, but I fell in love all over again as soon as I saw them.  (You probably know where I am going with this story.)  I thought they would be great in a wall arrangement, even though I don’t have a wall that needs an arrangement right now.  But, I continued to plan and play anyway and for now, they will remain here.
I will tell the rest of this tale with photo captions.

These are the pretty plates that for a micro second I thought of selling
And, the tray???

It’s a new junk store purchase that I could not pass it up!!!
It is the Brimfield tray from Southern Living At Home .
I thought it was wood, but it’s a resin-y material and it had some surface issues

I think the details are just fabulous but it really needs a little something – but what???
It just so happened that…

MY CHALK PAINT ORDER CAME FROM ROBYN STORY DESIGNS
and I was dying to play with my DUCK EGG AND OLD WHITE PAINTS!!!
This paint is truly so much fun to use.
All I had to do was to clean the dirty tray before I started painting.
No going outside to spray a primer on first – I love that!

And, the wax is really what brings the piece to life.
Plus, it supplies protection – I promise this paint is sticking like glue to this resin tray!

When I first started playing,  I thought I would just use the two matching dessert plates
by Johnson Bros.  River Scenes – they are discontinued, but not vintage.

The colors look so great together

Then I grabbed this square plate (Vintage Colonial Times by Crown Ducal/England)
The brown in the this plate is the same shade as the dark chocolate on the other two plates

~ One of the four corner designs ~

This combination makes my heart skip a beat!!!
I simply must find a place to use it!!!

And, I would love to have a whole set of these dishes!
I have one dinner plate, these two desert plates and two coffee cups – that’s a start.
*After a Google search, I  won’t be getting the rest of this set anytime soon at those prices!
Maybe, I’ll get lucky and discover other pieces in junk stores and yard sales!

  10. OH I love the plates and tray! Perfect color choices on the tray! I just got my first can of chalk paint (cream) and get this, a stockist lives about 2 blocks from me so she brought home what I needed and I picked it up at her house! What are you using to wax? I haven't purchased any yet.

  12. I love those transferware plates with the blue in them, Rhonda! The tray turned out beautifully. I feel like I've been working on the neverending project with this dresser here! Today I tried out the dark wax over the Old White, but I was a bit heavy handed. Miracle of miracles using the clear wax on top again helped that issue immediately! I'm loving the way it looks and just need to get my baskets done as I swore in my last post I would show it completely done the next time I posted about it. I still have to do my headboard, but I am thinking about trying the Paris Grey next!

  14. Beautiful transformation...I liked the tray both ways and would never have known from your photos that it was not wood. The colors you chose and the technique you used is gorgeous! I love the Crown Ducal transferware plate too! What a pretty vignette they all created together.

  15. Who wouldn't love those plates? They are utterly charming. If you keep your eye out, I am sure you'll be able to add to your collection.

I've often wished I could find a way to hack transferware. But if it were easy to copy, it wouldn't be that valuable. Still, I dream.

  18. I've got that same SL tray and the same issues with the finish. I think I picked it up at a little antique store south of where I live for next to nothing. Anyway....you just gave me the perfect solution to the not so great finish that is on it. Thank you for sharing!
