I Am A Fearless Seamtress

I think I can, I think I can....

If you didn't visit Miss Mustard Seed yesterday, you need to stop everything and go read it!  Marian's post  "Don't Be Afraid"  pretty much pegged me perfectly.

I like to think that I am a brave soul, but it's only a front and a weak one at that.  I am afraid of a lot of things - everything she named and lots more.  In fact, I would say I am a big old scaredy cat!!!

I actually commented on her New Year's Eve post that was all about her incredibly blessed year.  My comment was about my fear of trying to tackle a project as big as sewing a slipcover for my sofa.  She answered back by email and encouraged me to try it.

I sew. I sew quite well. I grew up wearing a lot of very nice handmade clothes that my mom painstakingly made. Three out of four of my formal gowns for my high school Coronation were made by sister #4. I took home economics. I have a fairly new sewing machine.  I have taken some specialty sewing classes.  I make pillows that I sell on Etsy and at my booth at Old Banks Antiques. I HAVE MADE SLIPCOVERS FOR HOSTESS CHAIRS...two sets in fact - they both turned out great.  So, you're asking, what's the big deal about sewing a sofa slipcover???  I Am A Scaredy Cat, remember?

But, not for long!

"Look out for a video slipcover tutorial series on my blog.  I'll show techniques and short cuts on different styles of upholstered furniture.  This series will hopefully become a resource for you and a place for beginners to get the courage to venture into the world of slipcovers." --- These are words straight from Miss Mustard Seed's blog and you better believe I am excited about it.  I fully believe that I will be able to accomplish this with her help.

In the meantime,  I will continue to make pillows, table runners, etc.  I whipped up this wine bag at Christmas just in case I needed a last minute gift, I could grab a bottle of wine and have an instant gift.

I used a vintage table cloth that had seen better days!

Hand dyed, scrunched ribbon was woven through the lace openings

I used silver rub-on French graphics on the gift card

The lace trim that I attached around the top is from the same tablecloth

I used the oh-so-versatile drop cloth as a liner since the lace is see through
And yes, I took the easy way out on this step!

I mitered the bottom to make it sit flat

We get this wine from Sam's Club. It is inexpensive, I usually get cork in the bottle, so I appreciate the screw off cap, and it's a great bottle!  Oh, it's slightly sweet and it's great with cheeses
The vintage table cloth cost $2.00 and I only used a small piece.
I figure the cost of this bag was under $.25

I am closing with Marian's beautiful slipcovered sofa and hoping that mine will turn out beautiful too!

Stunning!

  2. I am so with you. Someday, I too will conquer a slipcover! For now, I need to make some pillow covers...not quite the most ambitious sewing task for a beginner, but a good start! Good luck to you...I'm sure you will sew the best little slipcover there ever was! Visiting from Metamorphosis Monday.

Blessings to you and thanks for sharing!

  8. Rhonda I know how you feel! I'm a great at sewing myself, used to make all my own clothes, have made pillows, curtains, but never a slip cover! I can even weld! Yes, I said weld, and that's really scary cause it involves getting burned most of the time! But I really wanted to learn how to do it! I guess you just have to set your mind to something! Good luck with the slipcover, I can't wait to see your tutorial series!

The wine bag is so cute! Resling in my favorite!

  10. Great job, Rhonda! I love this! I think you could use that bag for lots of things, too. I have a tablecloth very much like that {packed away at the moment} that I got at my wedding shower 25 1/2 years ago. You go, girl! : )

  18. Rhonda you have such amazing talents at so many other things I have no doubt that within a few weeks there will be a post with your sofa slipcover for all to view. I recently started taking an upholstery at the local community college. I have really enjoyed the new things that I have created in this class. My instructor said half the battle with these things is in the measurements. Good luck!

  19. Rhonda,

I KNOW you CAN! I've seen your work and you can do anything you put your mind to!
My mother won scholarships and awards for sewing but decided to become a nurse. She did teach me to sew but I haven't in years and forget most of what I learned. It's intimidating. Perhaps I will take the old gal out and give her another go -- my sewing machine, not my mother! -- after watching Marian's tutorial.

    Your Friend,
    Deborah
