Vintage Spice Rack Tutorial

I bought this vintage spice rack a couple of weeks ago at one of my favorite local antique malls.  It wasn’t expensive at all and they are easy to find.   In fact, every flea market/ thrift store/ antique mall in Alabama has one of these spice racks!!!!

The rack came in the standard dark stain color.  I immediately primed and painted the rack and washed the jars. Then I stared at them for two weeks!

One day while I was chasing rabbits (aka blog link hopping) I discovered a beautiful and fun blog called “Eat Drink Chic”.  Low and behold,  Amy had a tutorial on aging spice labels!  I love when things like that happens – I guess it was happenstance!

You can find the tutorial here: DIY Vintage Herb Spice Bottles.   Her blog is full of great ideas and inspiration.  Expect to stay a while.

{Martha Stewart also has some cute spice labels here.}

Here are my before and after photos.

I forgot to take a picture before I painted it…

I am always in a hurry to get started!

I can’t decide if I am going to keep it or put it in my Etsy store.

I followed the directions for aging the labels, but I used tea instead of coffee.

I did my standard paint finish on the rack - minus the crackles.

This week I am linking to:

I have several small projects going.  Hopefully, it won’t be long before I can share them.

  3. For some reason I am having problems leaving comments on your blog lately. I love computers, but they sure can be fusterating sometimes (the same as cars-love them until they break down!). Anyway, I want to let you know I just love your spice rack! It is super cute. The labels, the distressed wood, it's all beautiful! I'm going to check out those links you left after I'm done here.
I also loved your post showing the deer in a field of wildflowers. It doesn't get any better than that for me!

  5. Love it, Rhonda! You did a great job painting it ~ the cherub at the top is great. I've read a post or two about using these for craft supplies, too. Seems like a good idea for storage of glitter and beads {and those little things}. I may have to look for something like this.

  12. That is SO cute & reminds me of the spice rack I did a couple of months ago. I did black & my labels aren't nearly as fancy or cute as yours, but I love it too. Great job!!

  14. Very pretty! I could see this also redone with beads in the bottles, or pearls for a French boudoir feel with shabby labels. Loving it!

  15. I love your spice rack, especially the paint job that you did on it! And the labels go so perfectly. This is so much prettier than just shoving the jars in the cabinet, like I do!

  18. Rhonda, that transformation is amazing. Looks like they have been that way for years!

I love the deer photos! The wildflowers are a perfect backdrop. BEAUTIFUL!

Glad to hear Alex and Mason are doing well. There is something about a grandchild that changes everything! ;) And, yep... pacing... it's all about pacing ourselves. Thanks for your kind words. Have a great week! ~ Tanna

  19. Rhonda -

This is darling! What a great transformation. I would be tempted to make one for the bathroom as well and label the spice jars for different scented bath salts.

  23. Rhonda-
    You did a great job.
A million years ago I think I had a spice rack like that that I used in its original state- it was all the rage.

Come by if you have time- I am having a thank you giveaway.
