A Special Memory Box

In the middle of creating items for “Blue Creek Boutique”, I decided that I needed to make something for myself.

I had made a fabric transfer of my paternal grandmother ages ago.  I came across it in a craft box that I recently opened for the first time since we have been in this house.  The photo was taken when she was young woman.  The little boy in her lap is Brown, who died very young.  She lived to a ripe old age.  She was the only grandparent still living when I was born,  so she was really special to me.

Everyone in our small community knew and loved her. Most people called her Aunt Mandy. She was Ma to all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her given name was Amanda Adeline.  I always thought her name was so romantic.

Ma could hold my sister and me spellbound as she told stories of her youth, marriage, and life experiences. We never tired of those sweet stories.

So,  this memory box is what I made for myself.  This is dedicated to you, Ma.

Isn’t she beautiful?

The box was really inexpensive at Hobby Lobby.  I painted it a pale blue, the color of the guest bedroom walls. It’s called “Silver Marlin” by Benjamin Moore. I used a little gold to highlight the top edge.  The little purple,  velvet flowers added some needed color.

I used vintage sheet music for the background.  Ma loved to sing and hear the family sing.

I used a bit of glaze to age  a paper doily and an angel wing that I painted.  The vintage pin has mother of pearl discs across the bottom.  I have a whole bag of old watches. I dismantled one that had a mother of pearl face to use with the pin.

I am linking to the “I Made It With Gorilla Glue” Party at “Shanty2Chic”- (I  used Gorilla Glue to attach the wings and the pins). These two Texas sisters are super talented.  They have the best ideas ever!

  2. So pretty! Her name is beautiful ... I have a great-great (maybe even another great) grandma who's name was Amy Allison. There's something about those double A's that really flows off the tongue.

I can't wait to see what else is in the boutique!

  10. This is simply beautiful! I'm fascinated by old photographs of family members...love to see what physical traits my own children carry from generations gone by. Unfortunately, a big nose has been the most common trait :o)

The angel wing is the perfect touch as I would like to believe that Ma is watching from above and is thrilled with your loving gesture and so very grateful for the legacy she left behind to live on through you.

  21. Hi Rhonda...

Girlfriend, I love your memory box of your grandmother! You did such a sweet job of decorating it! I love the old photo of Ma...she really was a beautiful woman!!! Of course, I love that soft blue with the touches of gold...so very pretty! Love how you used old sheet music for the background too! Ohhh...that beautiful pearl watch is just gorgeous! And it looks so Victorian...just perfect for your memory box! Thank you for sharing your beautiful project with us...so inspirational! Are you going to hang it in your guest room?

Well my friend, I just had to come by to let you know that I received my mantle and the faux fireplace is well underway...not finished but I'm getting there! I did a post about it today for Met Monday and thought of you! Especially since it was your fabulous mantle headboard that started my search for a mantle...which turned into the faux fireplace project! I would love for you to come and see it and let me know what you think! Thank you again for the great inspiration, my friend!!!

    Warmest wishes,
