The Bed Make-Over

Today, I am going to show you the guest room bed that I just overhauled.  It looked okay before.  I just wanted to change the fabric to a more neutral shade using linen. AND it was short on the “poof” factor!   My desire for poof skyrocketed when I saw what Gail @ “Gail’s Decorative Touch” did with an old mantel.   She had just posted her guest room make-over and her bed was  crazy gorgeous. Her poof was off the chain!!!  I asked her if she would share her poof secret and we exchanged a couple of e-mails. She was so nice and encouraging.  Thanks Gail!!!  Mine isn’t as poofy as yours, but it is much better than before. This talented girl has lots of wonderful projects going on at her place.  You will want to stay for a while, but just don’t forget to come back!!!

I am posting some before and after photos of the bed.

BEFORE:   The before bed is just so-so! Not great.  The faux suede fabric took on a pink cast that made me unhappy!  Truthfully, this picture makes me unhappy!!!! What was I thinking with the mixed up bedding and the too tall piece by the bed?  Your water could spill on your head in the middle of the night!!!

You can see that the headboard didn’t have very much batting in this photo.

I added the mattress pad and the extra batting right over the old fabric.   This is better, but my mattress pad was wimpy – that’s whatcha get for trying to save money!  Doubling it would have helped a lot, but I purchased a twin size so there wasn’t enough.  Sometimes being  frugal just doesn’t pay!

I had G-Man cut off 6 inches from the legs before I started to work.  I added some small molding to the top (I wanted traditional crown, but just can’t seem to get the miters right on crown!) This was flat on the back so it was a piece of cake!

Doesn’t the linen with more poof look better???  I think so.

Instead of investing in pillow shams, I  purchased two sets of pretty pillowcases.  TJ Maxx and  Tuesday Morning both had nice selections for decent prices. The small linen pillow with the bows was a $3.00 find at an antique mall.  This is the back, but I like the satin ribbons…And the front is monogrammed with TRINA anyway!!!!

I used an unfinished over mantel for this headboard.  I did this finish on it two years ago when I first came up with the idea of making it into a headboard.  I still love the finish and it goes perfectly with the room, so I didn’t change it.   I used the wall paint (Benjamin Moore’s Silver Marlin) for the background and then just went crazy trying to make it look old.

Side details -  These pillow cases are yummy!!!

I will be back with more photos and highlights of the guest room make-over in a few days. I want to start decorating Blue Creek Home with some fall fun first.
