I have been in the decorative painting business for fifteen years. Today, most of my creative energy goes into updating furniture, cabinets, and flea market finds. Updating for me means shabby, aged, time-worn, and patinated finishes.
Over the years, I have updated numerous items in my home and for clients.
Today, I am sharing Three barstools that I purchased new when we built Blue Creek Home, five years ago. They came with a dark cherry finish. They were perfect. But… they disappeared when they were pushed up against the bar, which happened to be the very same color!! So, of course, out came the faux finish supplies. Here they are updated with a distressed black gesso finish.
This finish is manipulated in such a way that it doesn’t appear to be sanded. (Real wear is very irregular.) I hand waxed them for durability.
Much better.
I am linking to the fun at “Miss Mustard Seed’s Furniture Friday.” This is my kind of party. Go check it out!
Today, is also “Show And Tell” at “My Romantic Home”. This is another amazing party with lots of inspiration.

These are beautiful....not the average bar stool!
ReplyDeleteThey are just gorgeous. I love the style and the new finish you did is just wonderful. What a talent. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThese stools are just gorgeous, Rhoda! They have such great detail {that I'm sure was lost when they were cherry}.
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I love them. Wish I was that talented.

Love this makeover. The finish is beautiful and so authentic looking. I also really like the style of the bar chair--it is so difficult to find great looking bar height charis but yours are wonderful. Great improvement and you were right to want the contast in colors.

These are gorgeous. I have a little French Wheatback chair with a rush seat - my favorite. The carving on yours are wonderful. Beautiful job!

Oh my goodness, they are sooooo gorgeous!!! That french country style chair is my absolute favorite style. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a pair I saw at Tuesday Morning years ago. Who cares that I didn't know where I would put them. I should have bought them and FOUND A PLACE! Well someday I'll come across them again and in the meanwhile I'll enjoy yours!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous job you did with this chair! Really like the detail on the back.

BEautiful! Is handwaxing hard to do? Timeconsuming?
ReplyDeleteHey Mama! You should make some gorgeous cushions for these! That can be your next project and it will put your fancy new sewing machine to use!!
ReplyDeleteWhat great chairs ! Endless possibilities - iffffff you don't want them, I will take them, LOL !
ReplyDeleteKammy
They look great! I would love to know how you do hand waxing?

This looks very nice and very expensive. I saw finishes like this on case goods when I was at the furniture market 2 weeks ago.

NOT what I was thinking when I clicked on a litk to 'Bar stools' This is SO much more then a 'Bar Stool'!!!! Is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Soooo beautiful! Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteYou make me want to start doing that again..but, I have damaged my wrists with years of "pouncing", dragging, rubbing..ladders...Now, I will just admire your work.
ReplyDeleteJessica
Love the finish ... much more than a "stool" ...
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful! Both the before and after are gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe Von Trapp Thanksgiving Carolers! I can smell a Pulitzer for near-lunatic levels of imagination. What was in the Halloween wassail? (They don't give Pulitzers for imagination and wassail is not a Halloweem custom yet, but it might start to be...) Did I hit you in the head with the sand shovel one too many times? If so, you can thank me. I am awed by your gift! The Fourth Sister
