Let It Snow…Man!!!

It has been several years since I have taken the time to make hand made Christmas ornaments.  A group of my buddies back in Mississippi held an annual Christmas ornament exchange party.  There were usually about ten of us participating in this fun event.  The only rule was that the ornaments had to be handmade by you and everyone got one.  So, we each  took home ten handmade ornaments, which also meant that we each made ten ornaments!  (I think that most of us were up until the wee hours of the morning the night before!)  A yummy brunch and mimosas were also a part of the festivities!  I miss it!

I always made angels for the exchange.  Let’s see…there was a seashell angel, a fabric angel, a paper mache angel, an embossed angel, ---okay, you get it!  I am starting to sound like Bubba and his shrimp story on Forrest Gump!

I think I am going back for the Christmas brunch this year, but we no longer make ornaments.  Everyone just got too busy, and several of us moved away.  I look forward to seeing all of my MS friends.

Okay, back to the post!  I really was in the mood to make ornaments this year.  I decided to make primitive snowmen.  I got the idea from a vendor at Angel’s  Antique & Flea Mall, in Opelika, AL.   They were made from worn quilt scraps. They were adorable!

I wanted to use materials that I already had on hand. I cut my pattern using three different sized circles. Canvas was used for their bodies and  I hand stitched them on the outside with embroidery thread.  They are wearing either felt or linen scarves and felt caps.  I made the hangers from jute twine and the buttons are twine knots.  I decided not to make faces or arms.

Caroline liked them so much that she asked me to show her how to make them!!!  What fun we had crafting at the kitchen table and listening to Christmas music.  She did a great job!

Isn’t he just the cutest thing?

Here is where it started.

We are making a snow family!!!

Simple but charming, and very inexpensive to make.  No sewing machine needed!

I sewed this one on the sewing machine using  flannel.   His scarf is a piece of ruffled trim.  He seems a bit plain so I may add little black beads for his eyes, or maybe a black felt top hat.

Look at these lovelies that I bought at Angels.

I love vintage fabrics and lace.  These all came from the same vendor who had a 40% off sale.  I got all three for $5.00!!!  They will dress up a shabby pillow beautifully.

I also got this sweet plate for $1.00!!!   It is Rose Point by Pope-Gosser U.S.A.   It has raised roses around the rim.  So Sweet.

The crazing is just wonderful!!!!

  5. Rhonda,
Thank you so much for adding my blog button to your amazing blog. I'm sending you a big hug! I am happy to have your button on my blog. It will give my blog a little class!

Your snowmen ornaments are great. My favorite type of Christmas ornaments are rustic, homemade, country ornaments. Makes me think about sitting by a stone fireplace in a log cabin and that just says "Christmas" to me. I don't know if any of that made any sense! Hopefully you understand what I mean.

BTW, I love that you now have your photo next to your comments. You have great hair!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  24. Rhonda,
I love the snowmen, and if a plate doesn't have crazing, I don't buy it..(that is, if it's an antique).
I also love the ornament party idea, and when I get to know ten people, I am going to do it!
Thanks for stopping by my blog...I did find some wonderful things.
    Have a blessed, wonderful Thanksgiving.
